How Can I Setup a Dual Monitors on My Computers?

Updated: Apr 10

How to Avoid Virtual Kidnapping Scams.

Whether you’re running a small or a big business or even an individual working from home, utilizing a dual monitor setup has proven a worthwhile investment. Having dual monitors connected to your computer is one of the best things you can do if you own a desktop or laptop computer. Setting up dual monitors can provide the best ROI in terms of general computing comfort and productivity. People who are in the following industries who can benefit most from dual computer monitors include entrepreneurs, work-from-home employees, designers, engineers, graphic designers, architects, and researchers — the list is endless. Before you rush out and purchase a second monitor for any computer, ensure your device allows dual computer monitor setup.

How Dual Screen Monitors Work. Dual computer monitors offer more desktop space on your Windows and Macintosh computers to give you more room to work. When you have this setup on your devices, you don't have to switch between between windows when you're working. For example, you can have one monitor that has your email up and running and another monitor with the document you're currently working on. You can also use the other monitor to play whatever computer-based game you're using while keeping an eye on work-related material. If you're working with team members, you can use one monitor to bring up documents you want them to view and move it to a second monitor to allow them to see what you want them to see, so they aren't hovering over your back.

Here are more reasons why you should consider implementing dual computer monitors:

It makes you more productive during virtual meetings. When you're logged into a Teams Meeting or a Zoom Call, a single monitor means you're just staring at one monitor and you're constantly flipping back and forth to see your colleagues. With dual monitors, you can slide your virtual meeting to your spare monitor and focus on other things such as taking notes, playing solitaire, or responding to emails. As a presenter, sharing your screen is a lot easier because you have more screen real estate to find the website or presentation you want to share with your audience.

Fewer Web BrowerTabs Open. If you’re like a lot of our customers, you probably have loads of tabs open when surfing the web. Having browser tabs won't ruin your computer, but it can cause a little stress when looking for that last website you were visiting. Dual monitors help spread out those tabs allowing you to have tabs open on browsers on both of your monitors. If you're researching on the web or using tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Co-Pilot, it helps to have your chatbot on one screen and what you're working on the extra monitor.

You can save more icons to the desktop. My computer's desktop is cluttered with icons. Why because I can quickly pull up the content I want to view. With dual monitors, you can pick which screen to store your desktop icons and keep the other monitor free. You can also spread them out evenly. With a single monitor, sometimes icons overlap making it hard to find what you're looking for.

Setting Up Dual Screen Monitors. Getting and installing an extended desktop is simple and relatively inexpensive. However, before buying additional monitors, ensure your existing computers support multiple monitors.

To set up a dual monitor set up, you’ll need the following:

  • Two monitors

  • If you're using a Windows laptop or a MacBook, make sure your computer has a least one HDMI port. Even if your laptop only has a single HDMI or USB-C port, you can connect dual monitors. Using a suitable HDMI splitter, a USB-C dongle, or a USB-C dongle with an HDMI interface, you can easily connect two or more monitors to your laptop.

  • For a desktop, you need a graphics card that can support dual monitors. If you don't have one, you can purchase a J5 Connector which will allow you to use a USB port to support a 2nd monitor.

  • Compatible connecting cables to link the monitors with your video card

  • Updated video card drive software

Once you have these items, your Windows or Macintosh computer should recognize there is another monitor available and expand your display to the other monitors.

Hopefully, this will help you decide if you need another monitor for your technology setup. If you have any questions, please reach out. I'm always looking to help out.
