How To Adopt a Zero Trust Mindset for Your Home and Office

I hate to break the bad news to you, but the locked door approach to tech is officially broken. Hackers don't break into your home and office devices anymore; they log in using stolen passwords that have been leaked to the dark web or by using AI-generated voice clones and deep fakes. Whether you are protecting your family photos or your small business’s client list, it is time to adopt a Zero Trust lifestyle. It sounds intimidating, but it’s actually a simple rule: Never trust, always verify. Here's what you need to know:

Here is how to set it up in three easy steps.

Kill the Password (Before it Kills Your Productivity). For a small business, one employee using "Password123" can take down the whole company. For an individual, it can lead to identity theft. Switch to Passkeys instead.

How To: Go to the security settings of your Google, Microsoft, or Banking accounts and select "Create a Passkey." Now, instead of a typed password, you’ll use your thumbprint or face scan. You can’t "leak" a thumbprint in a data breach. It ensures only the person physically holding the device can get in.

Implement the "Family & Team" Safe Word

AI can now mimic your voice with terrifying accuracy. Small businesses are being targeted by "fake boss" calls asking for urgent wire transfers, and families are being targeted by "fake emergency" scams. Create a non-digital Safe Word. Pick a random word (like "Blueberry" or "Marathon") that is never written in an email or text. If you get a suspicious or high-pressure request via phone—even if it sounds exactly like your spouse or your business partner—ask for the safe word. No word, no action.

Practice Least Privilege Access. We often give people (and apps) keys to the whole house when they only need to see the porch.

For Individuals: Go through your phone and delete any apps you haven't used in a month. If an app asks for your location or contacts, ask yourself: "Does a calculator really need to know where I live?"

For Small Businesses: Don't give every employee access to every file. Use "folder-level" permissions so the marketing assistant can’t accidentally see the payroll spreadsheet.

Use a simple cloud service like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 to audit who has "Edit" access to your most sensitive folders.

Zero Trust isn't about being paranoid; it’s about being intentional. By verifying identities and limiting access, you make yourself a hard target. The best tech tip in today's digital world isn't a new gadget or how to use them; it's a smarter way of moving through the digital world.

Spend this week, even if you have even one employee, just your spouse or even yourself, and spend 15 minutes learning how to set up a Passkey. It’s the cheapest insurance policy you’ll ever buy.
