Roblox is one of the world's most popular gaming platforms, offering a vast universe of user-created experiences where millions of children build, play, and socialize daily. However, recent high-profile lawsuits and extensive media reports have brought the platform's safety measures under intense scrutiny, with numerous allegations claiming that the company has failed to protect its youngest users adequately. If your kids are active on Roblox, you might want to take a minute to ensure they are staying safe and out of the crosshairs of people who want to prey on them. Here's what you need to know:
The best approach to keeping your kids safe on Roblox is a combination of utilizing Roblox's robust Parental Controls and maintaining open communication with your child. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make Roblox a safer experience for your family
Set Up and Link a Parent Account. To effectively manage your child's experience, you need to link your own account to theirs. This allows you to set controls remotely without needing to log into their account.
Create Your Account: Set up your own Roblox account (this will become your "Parent Account").
Verify Your Age: Roblox often requires parents to verify their age (via a government ID or credit card) to unlock the full range of parental controls.
Link Accounts: Follow Roblox's instructions to link your Parent Account to your child's account. This grants you access to the Parent Dashboard.
Lock Down Settings with the Parent PIN. This is the most critical step to prevent your child from changing the safety settings you implement.
Create a PIN: In your child's account Settings under Parental Controls, create a 4-digit Parent PIN.
Lock Controls: Once the PIN is set, your child cannot change the communication, privacy, or spending settings without entering this code.
Configure Communication and Privacy. The primary risk on Roblox is interaction with strangers. Use these settings to limit who can contact your child. It's best to set these settings to "No One" but you can chose what best fits your child. Find these settings in Settings > Privacy and Settings > Parental Controls > Communication.
Manage Content and Experiences. Roblox content is user-created, meaning games ("experiences") vary greatly in maturity.
Check Content Maturity: In the Parent Dashboard, set the Content Maturity level to Minimal or Mild to restrict your child's access to experiences containing violence, realistic blood, or other moderate themes.
Block Specific Experiences: If your child finds an inappropriate game within the allowed maturity level, you can use the Blocked Experiences feature in Parental Controls to manually block that title.
Control Screen Time and Spending. Set clear boundaries for usage and purchases of the in-game currency, Robux.
Set Screen Time Limits: Use the Screen Time management tool in the Parent Dashboard to set a daily time limit for your child on the platform.
Set Monthly Spending Limits: To avoid unexpected credit card charges, set a Monthly Spending Limit on how much Robux can be purchased. You can also turn off in-app purchasing entirely via your device's app store settings.
No setting is a substitute for an open conversation. Discuss these essential safety rules with your child regularly. Emphasize that they must never share their real name, age, address, school, email, or social media handles—even with a "friend."Digital "Stranger Danger": is a real and dangerous thing. Teach them that an online friend is still a stranger. If someone they don't know in real life makes them feel uncomfortable, asks overly personal questions, or tries to get them to communicate outside of Roblox (a major red flag), they must immediately tell you. Periodically review their "Connections" (friends list) and "Top Experiences" played within the Parent Dashboard to stay informed about who they are interacting with and what they are playing.
